Growing up, I've always appreciated the wisdom of older members of our community. My great-grandfather, who pursued a lengthy engineering career, served as a beacon of inspiration. Even in his mid-90s, he remained actively engaged, whether through crafting woodworking projects, enjoying a round of golf, or lending his time to volunteering.

After being in the thick of working towards a career goal throughout college, I wondered what comes next when that is over. Thus, the mission of my Professional Master's Capstone Project is to explore stories of how people find purpose in retirement and the lessons they have learned along the way. I hope that this project entertains, inspires, and fosters positive intergenerational relationships while helping retirees feel understood by giving them a platform to share their stories.
About the Project
You work all your life, saving for retirement. But when you finally reach it, what happens next? The image of a stereotypical Florida retirement might conjure visions of serene beachfront condos and cold beverages in hand or famous active adult retirement communities. But for these purpose-seeking retirees who have the privilege of entering this stage of life, there’s more to it.
This is Reinventing Retirement, a collection of four compelling visual narratives showcasing how Florida's retirees are redefining their golden years. Emerging from decades-long careers, these individuals are determined to find meaning in this new chapter of their lives. Ranging from 72 to 87 years old, this collection of narratives features Peggy, a karaoke sensation; Jeff and Patti, a couple nomadically traveling around the globe; Carolyn, a fervent social justice advocate; and Jackie, a Peace Corps alumna.
Through these stories, the project aims to inspire viewers by sharing the reflections and personal growth experienced by these retirees. By fostering connections between generations, the project seeks to create a newfound appreciation for the wisdom and vitality often overlooked in the retired population.
